Canon Inaugurates New Digital Camera Plant in Nagasaki, Japan
June 10, 2010
Japanese Canon recently announced the opening of its new DSC (Digital Still Camera) plant in Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture, southern Japan, the Jiji Press reported on June 4. With a total area of around 41,700 square meters and a manpower of over 1,000 employees, the new plant, named Nagasaki Canon, is valued at approximately 17.4 billion Yen (US$190.7 million; US$1 = 91.2 Yen), with an annual capacity of four million cameras, according to a press release by Canon. The construction of the plant was deferred twice and finally kicked off construction in July 2009. Other than its Nagasaki plant, Canon also has another plant in Oita, called Oita Canon, which is geographically close to Nagasaki Canon, helping the company to reduce its logistics costs. Oita Canon's capacity accounted for around 60% of the Canon's total digital cameras, according to the JCN (Japan Corporate News) Network.
